Description:
- tall deciduous tree
- etymology: Fagus = the Latin name; grandifolia = large-leaved
- leaves elliptic/egg-shaped, toothed
- flowers incomspicuous, yellowish-green; monoecious (separate male and female flowers on same tree)
- fruits spiny; oily triangular nuts important food for wildlife
- buds long and pointed
- bark distinctive; smooth, light grey
- wood strong and hard (but not durable)
- common in forests throughout eastern North America, especially rich moist soils
- shade tolerant, slow-growing; difficult to transplant
