Description:
  • deciduous shrub
  • etymology: Cornus from Latin cornus = hard; sericea = silky
  • formerly Cornus stolonifera (synonym)
  • leaves opposite (as in most dogwoods); leaf veins arcuate (curve towards the tip, parallel to the leaf edges)
  • flowers small, white, clustered (lack the showy white bracts of our native flowering dogwood C. florida)
  • twigs bright red, distinctive; especially in winter
  • fruit white, sometimes bluish; food for birds and other wildlife
  • forms dense thickets

Native to Delaware. State status “SU” (“Undetermined”; species that are thought to be rare or uncommon, but cannot be included within another classification), in New Castle County piedmont
