Description:
- small to medium-sized deciduous tree
- etymology: Stewartia named by Linnaeus after John Stuart (1713-92), Earl of Bute; pseudocamellia = false camellia
- leaf elliptic, finely toothed (serrate), to 4 ½“ long
- flower showy, large; petals 5, white; anthers orange
- fruit brown capsule
- trunk single, or multiple
- in the tea family, which also includes tea, camellia, and franklinia
- prefers moist soil; likes some afternoon shade if hot and dry
