Planting history: probably planted with new Administration Building ca 2004.

Description:
  • small to medium-sized deciduous tree
  • etymology: Stewartia named by Linnaeus after John Stuart (1713-92), Earl of Bute; pseudocamellia = false camellia
  • leaf elliptic, finely toothed (serrate), to 4 ½“ long
  • flower showy, large; petals 5, white; anthers orange
  • fruit brown capsule
  • trunk single, or multiple
  • in the tea family, which also includes tea, camellia, and franklinia
  • prefers moist soil; likes some afternoon shade if hot and dry
