Description:
- medium-sized evergreen tree, conifer
- etymology: Picea from pix = pitch (sticky resin); omorika = the native name (Yugoslavia)
- medium-sized evergreen tree, conifer
- leaves short, needle-like; 4-sided and sharp-pointed (as in other spruces)
- branchlets hang downward (pendulous); sometimes confused with Picea abies Norway spruce
- very attractive tree, with short graceful branches, and slender habit
- tolerates pollution and humidity better than other spruces
- slow-growing
- listed as endangered on the IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened SpecIes; native range restricted to fewer than 5 locations in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where it continues to decline slowly, due to competition and poor regeneration
