Description:
  • medium-sized evergreen tree, conifer
  • etymology: Picea from pix = pitch (sticky resin); omorika = the native name (Yugoslavia)
  • medium-sized evergreen tree, conifer
  • leaves short, needle-like; 4-sided and sharp-pointed (as in other spruces)
  • branchlets hang downward (pendulous); sometimes confused with Picea abies Norway spruce
  • very attractive tree, with short graceful branches, and slender habit
  • tolerates pollution and humidity better than other spruces
  • slow-growing
  • listed as endangered on the IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened SpecIes; native range restricted to fewer than 5 locations in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, where it continues to decline slowly, due to competition and poor regeneration
