Description:
- small evergreen tree
- etymology: Picea from pix = pitch (sticky resin); glauca = glaucous (whitish-greyish waxy coating); Conica = cone-shaped
- variety ‘Conica’ is dwarf with a compact conical shape; commonly-planted ornamental, can be pruned as topiary
- occasionally reverts to the species, which is a medium- to large-sized tree with different foliage
- leaves short, needle-like, dense; 4-sided and sharp-pointed (as in other spruces)
- cones rarely produced
- the species Picea glauca (white spruce) is native to boreal (and temperate) forests in northern N. America; said to be the northern-most tree species
