Description:
- medium-sized deciduous tree
- etymology: Betula = latin name; lenta = strong but flexible
- also called black birch, and cherry birch
- leaves simple, alternate, toothed
- monoecious (separate male and female flowers on the same plant); flowers small, in catkins
- fruits small, ovoid, winged (samaras); clustered into an upright cone-like structure
- delicious wintergreen scent, when scratch twig; from chemical methyl salicylate
- bark dark with thin horizontal lines (lenticels)
