Description:
- evergreen shrub
- etymology: Nandina from the Japanese name (nanten); domestica = cultivated
- also known as sacred bamboo, for its stiff bamboo-like stems; but not a real bamboo
- monotypic genus (this is the only species of Nandina)
- leaf compound; leaflets narrow, oval, 1”-3” long; red-purple in autumn
- flowers tiny
- fruit attractive; bright red, in large hanging clusters
- all parts of plant are toxic; attractive ornamental
