Description:
  • large deciduous tree
  • etymology: Ulmus = the Latin name; hollandica = of Holland
  • naturally-occuring hybrid between Wych elm (Ulmus glabra) and field elm (Ulmus minor) in areas of species overlap in Europe
  • also called “Dutch elm”, but actually has moderate resistance to Dutch elm disease (which has decimated the American elm Ulmus americana)
  • leaf double-toothed, leaf base uneven
  • flowers inconspicuous
  • fruit small, roundish, dry, flat, winged
  • graceful vase shape
