LEYLAND-CYPRESS
Cupressaceae

Planting history: presently unknown.

Description:
  • large evergreen tree, conifer
  • said to be intergeneric hybrid between Monterey cypress and Nootka cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa x Chamaecyparis nootkatensis, although the taxonomy of the latter is in dispute); said to be the only intergeneric hybrid among gymnosperms
  • leaves small, scale-like; in flat sprays
  • sterile; propagated by cuttings
  • fast-growing; very commonly planted as a screening hedge, but has resulted in property disputes because of tall, dense, overshadowing growth. Maximum height ca 130’; but shallow-rooted, so large trees tend to fall over
  • prefers full sun
