Description:

  • etymology: Chaenomeles from Greek chaina (to gape) and melon (apple), because fruit was believed to be split; speciosa = showy
  • leaves simple, alternate, oval
  • flowers red, pink (or white); very early in spring before the leaves
  • fruit a pome; edible but bitter (sometimes used in preserves)
  • branches spiny
