Description:
  • large evergreen tree, conifer
  • etymology: Cryptomeria from Greek krypto to hide, and meris a part (referring to the concealed reproductive parts); japonica = from Japan
  • also called Japanese-cedar (but not a true cedar Cedrus)
  • monotypic genus (the only species of Cryptomeria)
  • leaves awl-shaped; turn a bronze tinge in winter
  • cones globe-shaped, ½” – 1”
  • bark reddish-brown, shredding
  • wood rot-resistant
  • easy to grow, graceful tree; cultivated in Japan for centuries; >200 cultivars
  • endemic to Japan; called “Sugi”; some trees very large, old
