Description:
- evergreen shrub/small tree
- etymology; Juniperus = the Latin name; chinensis = of China; ‘Kaizuka’ = city in Japan
- sometimes incorrectly called Juniperus chinensis ‘Torulosa’
- mature leaves scale-like; juvenile leaves short-needle-like
- dioecious (separate male and female plants)
- modified cone berry-like, with bluish waxy coating (glaucous) turning violet-brown at maturity (2 years)
- shape unique, with twisted upright branches; height 15’-30’
- popular ornamental; cultivar probably called “Hollywood” because much planted in Los Angeles after introduction from Japan to U.S., ca 1920
