- etymology: Hydrangea from Greek hydor for water, and aggos for a jar; paniculata for flowers in panicles (branching clusters)
- leaves opposite (whorled towards stem tip); simple, oval, toothed
- flowers creamy white, in showy panicles
- blooms in late summer
- contains cyanogenic glycosides
