common name misleading; not a cherry (Prunus), but a dogwood (Cornus)
leaves opposite (as in most dogwoods); leaf veins arcuate (curve towards the tip, parallel to the leaf edges)
flowers yellow, small, clustered (lack the showy white bracts of our native flowering dogwood C. florida)
fruit red drupe; edible, tart, good for jams
