CORNELIAN-CHERRY

Cornaceae
Europe, S.W. Asia

Location: map coordinates Q-26 (northeast side of Warren-Franklin Hall), N 39°11'7'' W 75°32'32''

Planting history: presently unknown.
  • deciduous small tree or large shrub
  • etymology: Cornus = Latin for horn (which is hard; referring to the wood); mas = male (used to refer to more robust species)
  • common name misleading; not a cherry (Prunus), but a dogwood (Cornus)
  • leaves opposite (as in most dogwoods); leaf veins arcuate (curve towards the tip, parallel to the leaf edges)
  • flowers yellow, small, clustered (lack the showy white bracts of our native flowering dogwood C. florida)
  • fruit red drupe; edible, tart, good for jams

*Non-native species (not native to Delaware)
