Description:

- flowers very attractive; petals typically a shade of red (yellow, or white); flowers “double” (with extra petals), as in most ornamental roses (double flowers may block access of pollinators to nectar); (the species has 5 petals)
- fruit a rose “hip” (aggregate fruit); rich in vitamin C; made into jelly, jam
- stems with prickles (sharp “thorny” epidermal outgrowths)
- popular ornamental; many species, hybrids, cultivars. Native to Asia (most), Europe, northwest Africa, N. America (3 species native to Delaware). A few cultivated rose species escape into natural areas in Delaware
