Description:
- medium-sized evergreen tree, conifer
- etymology: Abies is the classical name; balsamea = balsam (aromatic resin); phanerolepis = conspicuous-scaled
- leaves short needle-like, flat, round-tipped
- cones upright (as in other firs)
- Canaan fir is a naturally-occurring variety of balsam fir, found in isolated pockets of West Virginia and Virginia mountains; climate cool.
- the species, balsam fir, is native to central and north Appalachian Mts and NE US and Canada, and important in the pulp-wood (too soft for lumber), and Christmas tree industries
