- etymology: Cornus = Latin for horn (which is hard; referring to the wood); mas = male (used to refer to more robust species)
- common name misleading; not a cherry (Prunus), but a dogwood (Cornus)
- leaves opposite (as in most dogwoods); leaf veins arcuate (curve towards the tip, parallel to the leaf edges)
- flowers yellow, small, clustered (lack the showy white bracts of our native flowering dogwood C. florida)
- fruit red drupe; edible, tart, good for jams
