  • evergreen shrub or small tree, conifer
  • etymology: Thuja from Greek name for a juniper; occidentalis = western
  • common name “arborvitae” means “tree of life”, for medicinal uses (but contains neurotoxin thujone)
  • this cultivar is dwarf (3’-5’ tall), slow-growing (different from the species, which is tall)
  • leaves scale-like, forming flat sprays; bronze-yellow in winter
