Description:
  • deciduous shrub
  • etymology: Aronia from Greek name aria for Sorbus aria; arbutifolia = arbutus-leaved
  • leaves simple, toothed (serrate), alternate; with slender glands on midvein on upper surface
  • flowers small, white, in compound clusters; in April/May
  • fruits bright red, until midwinter; astringent; used in jams, juice etc.; rich in antioxidant anthocyanins
  • habitat wet woods, swamps
