Description:

  • etymology: Carpinus = Latin name; betulus = from Betula (birch)
  • leaves simple, egg-shaped, toothed, alternate
  • monoecious (separate male and female flowers on the same plant); flowers small, in catkins
  • fruit small, dry, with conspicuous leafy bracts; wind-dispersed
  • wood hard
  • shape attractive
