Description:
  • tall deciduous tree
  • etymology: Fagus = the Latin name; grandifolia = large-leaved
  • leaves elliptic/egg-shaped, toothed
  • flowers incomspicuous, yellowish-green; monoecious (separate male and female flowers on same tree)
  • fruits spiny; oily triangular nuts important food for wildlife
  • buds long and pointed
  • bark distinctive; smooth, light grey
  • wood strong and hard (but not durable)
  • common in forests throughout eastern North America, especially rich moist soils
  • shade tolerant, slow-growing; difficult to transplant
