Description:
  • evergreen shrub, conifer
  • etymology: Chamaecyparis from Greek chamai for low-growing and kuparissos for cypress; pisifera = pea-bearing (referring to the small cones); ‘Filifera’ = narrow, threadlike (leaves); ‘Aurea’ = golden
  • leaves scale-like; foliage thread-like (“filifera”), drooping, and golden (“aurea”); best golden color on south-facing side
  • cones small, with peltate scales
  • often used as a screen/hedge; can grow slowly to 10-15 feet tall
  • the species is native to Japan
