  • etymology: Cladrastis from Greek klados branch, and kentukea for Kentucky. (Specific epithet formerly lutea = yellow)
  • leaves compound, with 7-11 leaflets
  • flowers white, in showy clusters
  • fruit a legume (in pea, bean, legume family)
  • wood bright yellow (hence common name); favored for gunstocks
