- etymology: Cladrastis from Greek klados branch, and kentukea for Kentucky. (Specific epithet formerly lutea = yellow)
- leaves compound, with 7-11 leaflets
- flowers white, in showy clusters
- fruit a legume (in pea, bean, legume family)
- wood bright yellow (hence common name); favored for gunstocks
