Description:
  • evergreen shrub/small tree
  • etymology; Juniperus = the Latin name; chinensis = of China; ‘Kaizuka’ = city in Japan
  • sometimes incorrectly called Juniperus chinensis ‘Torulosa’
  • mature leaves scale-like; juvenile leaves short-needle-like
  • dioecious (separate male and female plants)
  • modified cone berry-like, with bluish waxy coating (glaucous) turning violet-brown at maturity (2 years)
  • shape unique, with twisted upright branches; height 15’-30’
  • popular ornamental; cultivar probably called “Hollywood” because much planted in Los Angeles after introduction from Japan to U.S., ca 1920
