- evergreen shrub
- etymology: Leucothoe after Leucothoe in Greek mythology, who was changed into a shrub by her lover Apollo; axillaris = axillary (for location of flower clusters in leaf axils)
- leaves simple; shiny, dark green, leathery
- flowers showy; white, urceolate (urn-shaped), in axillary clusters (racemes); fragrant
- low-growing; matures slowly to 3’-4’
- native Florida to SE Virginia; cultivated and occasionally escaping to woods in Delaware in Kent and Sussex Counties
