Description:
  • evergreen shrub
  • etymology: Leucothoe after Leucothoe in Greek mythology, who was changed into a shrub by her lover Apollo; axillaris = axillary (for location of flower clusters in leaf axils)
  • leaves simple; shiny, dark green, leathery
  • flowers showy; white, urceolate (urn-shaped), in axillary clusters (racemes); fragrant
  • low-growing; matures slowly to 3’-4’
  • native Florida to SE Virginia; cultivated and occasionally escaping to woods in Delaware in Kent and Sussex Counties

**Adventive species (not native to Delaware, but native to N. America and now growing wild in DE), on Delaware coastal plain
