Description:
- medium-sized deciduous tree
- etymology: Sorbus Latin name for service tree; alnifolia = alder-(Alnus) leaved
- also known as Korean whitebeam, or alder-leafed whitebeam
- leaves toothed (serrate); simple, unlike other mountain-ashes (Sorbus) which have compound leaves; orangish-red in autumn
- flowers white, 5-petaled, in flat-topped clusters (corymbs), in May
- fruit red, showy, small pome (apple-like fruit)
- doesn’t grow well south of USDA Zone 7, because of hot /humid summers. Common name “mountain ash” comes from its preferred cool mountain habitats
