Description:
  • large deciduous tree
  • etymology: Juglans from the Latin name (from jovis [Jupiter] and glans [nut]); regia = royal
  • leaves pinnately compound; leaflets 5-9
  • monoecious (separate male and female flowers on same tree); flowers small; male flowers in catkins
  • fruits large, with greenish-brown husk; nuts edible; this is the familiar walnut commonly sold in supermarkets; also known as Persian walnut and California walnut
  • English sailors were important in distribution of the nuts of this tree, in the past
  • native to Eurasia, from the Balkans to SW China; with largest forests in Kyrgystan
