Description:
  • deciduous tree
  • etymology: Koelreuteria after Joseph Koelreuter (1733-1806), German botanist, professor; paniculata = flowers in panicles (branching clusters)
  • leaves compound; leaflets 7-17
  • flowers attractive; yellow, in clusters (panicles), in early summer
  • fruits distinctive; resemble Chinese lanterns, tan in color; hang in clusters, until following spring
  • tolerant of drought, wind, salt
  • cultivated and occasionally escapes into disturbed areas, in New Castle and Sussex Counties
