Description:
  • deciduous shrub, or small tree
  • etymology: Poncirus from the French for a type of citron; trifoliata = 3-leaved (leaflets)
  • leaves compound, with 3 (rarely 5) leaflets; aromatic, when crushed
  • flowers white, fragrant, to ca 2" wide
  • twigs green, with many stout green thorns (1”-2” inches long); planted as hedges in the south
  • fruits resemble small hard oranges (also in citrus family; fruit is a hesperidium); too bitter to eat fresh, but used as marmalade and condiment
