Description:
- deciduous shrub
- etymology: Hamamelis from Greek name for another plant; vernalis = of Spring
- leaves egg-shaped, toothed; slightly uneven at base
- flowers small, red (sometimes yellow), open in mid-winter to early spring (December to March), with 4 ribbon-like petals
- fruits woody, thick; open explosively
- native to Ozark Plateau (Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma)
