Planting history: probably planted with new Administration Building ca 2004.

Description:
  • deciduous shrub
  • etymology: Hamamelis from Greek name for another plant; vernalis = of Spring
  • leaves egg-shaped, toothed; slightly uneven at base
  • flowers small, red (sometimes yellow), open in mid-winter to early spring (December to March), with 4 ribbon-like petals
  • fruits woody, thick; open explosively
  • native to Ozark Plateau (Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma)
