Description:
- large evergreen tree, conifer
- etymology: Cryptomeria from Greek krypto to hide, and meris a part (referring to the concealed reproductive parts); japonica = from Japan
- also called Japanese-cedar (but not a true cedar Cedrus)
- monotypic genus (the only species of Cryptomeria)
- leaves awl-shaped; turn a bronze tinge in winter
- cones globe-shaped, ½” – 1”
- bark reddish-brown, shredding
- wood rot-resistant
- easy to grow, graceful tree; cultivated in Japan for centuries; >200 cultivars
- endemic to Japan; called “Sugi”; some trees very large, old
