stems with prickles (sharp “thorny” epidermal outgrowths)
popular ornamental; many species, hybrids, cultivars. Native to Asia (most), Europe, northwest Africa, N. America (3 species native to Delaware). A few cultivated rose species escape into natural areas in Delaware
