Description:
  • evergreen tree, conifer
  • etymology: Picea from pix = pitch (sticky resin); pungens = sharp, pointed (leaves); ‘Glauca’ = glaucous (whitish-greyish waxy coating)
  • leaves short, needle-like; 4-sided and sharp-pointed (as in other spruces)
  • cones light brown, ca 4” long
  • native to higher elevations of Rocky Mountains
  • slow-growing and long-lived (ca 600-800 yrs)
  • wood soft and brittle
