Description:
- evergreen tree, conifer
- etymology: Picea from pix = pitch (sticky resin); pungens = sharp, pointed (leaves); ‘Glauca’ = glaucous (whitish-greyish waxy coating)
- leaves short, needle-like; 4-sided and sharp-pointed (as in other spruces)
- cones light brown, ca 4” long
- native to higher elevations of Rocky Mountains
- slow-growing and long-lived (ca 600-800 yrs)
- wood soft and brittle
