Description:
  • deciduous tree
  • etymology: Acer is the classical name; Acer means sharp, probably from Roman spears with sharp tips, made from the wood of a maple species; platanoides = like Platanus (plane tree, sycamore)
  • leaves opposite (as in all maples); palmately lobed; lack small teeth between the lobes
  • leaf has white milky sap (distinguishes it from sugar maple)
  • said to be monoecious (separate male and female flowers on the same plant) or dioecious (male and female flowers on different plants); flowers small, yellow-green
  • fruit = 2 joined samaras (winged achenes), forming almost a straight line in shape
  • creates dense shade
  • commonly planted ornamental; occasionally escapes in Delaware
