Description:
- deciduous shrub
- etymology: Euonymus = the Latin name; alata = winged (the stems)
- leaves opposite, turn bright-red in autumn
- flowers small, greenish, not showy
- stems with 2-4 distinctive corky “wings”
- fruit purplish, with an orange aril
- popular ornamental; invasive in woodlands of eastern North America
