  • etymology: Ilex from the Latin name for holm oak/holly oak (Quercus ilex); ‘Nellie R. Stevens’ for the discoverer of this hybrid
  • hybrid between English holly (Ilex aquifoliumn) and Chinese holly (I. cornuta), resulting from a chance crossing; discovered by Nellie R. Stevens (1866-1942), schoolteacher, Oxford, Maryland
  • leaves dark green, lustrous, toothed
  • polygamo-dioecious (separate male and female trees, with some perfect flowers); flowers small, whitish
  • fruits red, berry-like drupe (stone fruit); abundant; food for birds
  • popular ornamental
