Description:
- large deciduous tree
- etymology: Ulmus = the Latin name; hollandica = of Holland
- naturally-occuring hybrid between Wych elm (Ulmus glabra) and field elm (Ulmus minor) in areas of species overlap in Europe
- also called “Dutch elm”, but actually has moderate resistance to Dutch elm disease (which has decimated the American elm Ulmus americana)
- leaf double-toothed, leaf base uneven
- flowers inconspicuous
- fruit small, roundish, dry, flat, winged
- graceful vase shape
