Description:
  • medium-sized deciduous tree
  • etymology: Betula = latin name; lenta = strong but flexible
  • also called black birch, and cherry birch
  • leaves simple, alternate, toothed
  • monoecious (separate male and female flowers on the same plant); flowers small, in catkins
  • fruits small, ovoid, winged (samaras); clustered into an upright cone-like structure
  • delicious wintergreen scent, when scratch twig; from chemical methyl salicylate
  • bark dark with thin horizontal lines (lenticels)

Native species, State Rank S4 (common, but not very common, in Delaware)
