Description:
- deciduous shrub
- etymology: Cornus from Latin cornus = hard; sericea = silky
- formerly Cornus stolonifera (synonym)
- leaves opposite (as in most dogwoods); leaf veins arcuate (curve towards the tip, parallel to the leaf edges)
- flowers small, white, clustered (lack the showy white bracts of our native flowering dogwood C. florida)
- twigs bright red, distinctive; especially in winter
- fruit white, sometimes bluish; food for birds and other wildlife
- forms dense thickets
