- etymology: Malus = Latin name for apple
- crabapples are non-domesticated apple trees, with fruits generally <2” diameter
- leaves simple, alternate
- flowers showy; pinkish, white; fragrant; appear with the leaves
- fruit a small pome; sour, but high pectin content useful for making orange-red colored apple jelly; can be showy
- numerous species of crabapples native to the northern hemisphere temperate zone; also numerous ornamental hybrids, cultivars
