Description:
  • large evergreen tree
  • etymology: Pseudotsuga from Greek pseudo = false, and tsuga = hemlock; menziesii after Archibald Menzies (1754-1842), Scottish naval surgeon and botanist, who collected in western North America
  • leaves linear, flat, evergreen
  • cones with distinctive 3-pronged bracts, which protrude ca ½ inch from cone scales
  • seeds important wildlife food
  • native to western N. America (Rocky Mts, coastal regions)
  • important for construction (beams etc.), although wood soft and light
