  • etymology: Pinus = the Latin name; mugo = old Tyrol name
  • specific epithet occasionally mis-spelled “mugho”; older scientific name (synonym) Pinus montana
  • also known as Swiss mountain pine
  • needles in 2’s; ca 1”-3” long
  • cones ca 1”-2” long
  • ornamental species; with a number of subspecies, short shrubs or tall trees (to ca 66’ tall)
  • native range Central Europe mountains (Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians etc); mostly ca 3,000’-7,000’ altitude
