Description:
- deciduous shrub
- etymology: Chaenomeles from Greek chaina (to gape) and melon (apple), because fruit was believed to be split; speciosa = showy
- leaves simple, alternate, oval
- flowers red, pink (or white); very early in spring before the leaves
- fruit a pome; edible but bitter (sometimes used in preserves)
- branches spiny
